Vegetable tanning is an ancient technique that dates back to antiquity and developed in medieval Tuscany in the lands located along the Arnò river. The skin is placed in a barrel with the water that contains tannins (natural dyes, coming from plants and tree bark). The modern tanning technique requires the barrels to rotate and beat for about 48 hours. This technique allows to obtain a softer and more flexible leather.
Attention! The surface of the vegetable tanned leather has irregularities and roughness and in some areas different shades of colour. This is not a defect, but it is the characteristic of a real leather, worked and naturally tanned according to ancient Tuscan techniques.
