Vegetable tanning is an ancient technique that dates back to the medieval period and developed in Tuscany in the lands located along the Arnò river. The skin is placed in a barrels with water containing tannins (natural dyes, coming from plants and tree bark). To obtain a softer and more flexible leather, the modern tanning technique requires the barrels to rotate and beat for about 48 hours.
This leather is made with a very complex and difficult treatment to develop. First the bag is completely assembled from a raw hide, then a dye bath is carried out during which it loses 30% of its volume. Then spread and dried slowly in the open air, and treated by hand with a natural beeswax. This last step gives the product an unmistakable softness and a beautiful aged effect.
This type of coloring is 100% ecological.
